Having positive and uplifting friendships can be especially important for low-income youth, who may face additional challenges and stressors. Research suggests that low-income youth who have positive relationships are better able to navigate the challenges they face and have better academic performance, mental health, and physical health outcomes.
Positive friendships can give low-income youth a sense of belonging and support, which can be particularly important in facing the social and economic stressors they may experience. These friendships can also serve as a positive influence, helping to shape their values and behaviors in a healthy way, which can be beneficial as they grow and develop.
When having goals or wanting to make better of yourself and your future, negative relationships can cause a youth to turn towards a negative path and ignore their true passions and dreams. Positive friendships make low-income youth feel more motivated, engaged, and hopeful about their future. Giving low-income youths a sense of purpose will help them engage in constructive activities, resist risky behavior and become more resilient to stress. They also can access more resources and opportunities through their friends and their friends' families, which can help bridge the gap in socio-economic status.
Having positive and uplifting friendships can have a significant impact on the social and emotional development of youth. These friendships can provide a sense of belonging and support, boosting self-esteem and self-confidence. Additionally, positive connections can serve as a positive influence, helping to shape a young person's values and behaviors healthily. Research has also suggested that youth with positive friendships are more likely to perform well academically and have better mental and physical health. They are also less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and have better-coping mechanisms during stress and challenges.
With Generation Connect, we want to instill messages in low-income youth to seek the best possible relationships, go against making poor decisions, and find friends that will uplift you and your dreams.
